Stammered Songbook

by Erwin Mortier

An evocative meandering of life with an Alzheimer’s patient. Literary, beautiful prose illuminate the image of watching a loved one lose their mind to this dreadful disease.

This book was unexpected. Instead of a drama with family members clashing over a loved one’s last years, I received a provoking memoir of the painful degeneration of memories.

There were times that the prose stood out in startling clarity, so much so that the image haunted. But there were other moments where the lack of dialogue and character interactions made the tale drag.

I am grateful to have read it, but also grateful that it wasn’t any longer.
